Lancia Lambda Casaro Roadster Series 7 Year: 1927 Description This car is an extraordinary “barn” find along the lines of some of the other very significant discoveries made in the last five years including Bugattis, Darl’mat and others. This car was purchased from a neighbor by Mr. English, a resident of New York State in 1943. The previous owner had wanted to turn the car into a trailer but on finding that the car had no frame (Lambda’s were the first true monocoque bodied production cars) it was not useful to that end. Mr. English offered to purchase it as he had an interest in Lancia having owned an earlier example. The owner told Mr. English that while he could sell the car he would still require the wheels for his trailer project. English told him that he had a set of Model A Ford rims and tires so the trade was made. English owned the car until his passing and used it sparingly until the early eighties when it was put in the back of the family garage and left. The current owner acquired it from the family in the summer of 2010. This car is very important as it is not just a barn find but it is absolutely original with two small exceptions. In 1956 the Bosch magneto was removed to be rebuilt and the rebuilder lost all of the internal components. English substituted a four plug distributor and the problem was solved. The only other alteration was to the right side battery box which was marginally enlarged to accommodate the larger US batteries. The alteration was very skillfully rendered and is virtually undetectable. Other that that the car including interior, paint and all of its mechanical components are factory original making this in all likely hood the most original car of a its type. If it were an ordinary torpedo it would be rare enough but the fact that it is a very rare Casaro roadster makes it even more desirable and exotic. There are reputed to be only six known Casaro Lambda Roadsters, this would be the seventh. The car is quite scruffy and the running boards would need some reinforcing if the car were to be used and not added to a museum collection. It does run. It took about twenty minutes to coax it to life and to the mechanic’s consternation it sat and purred as if its last errand was the day before, not three decades ago. The Lancia Lambda was arguably one of the most advanced cars of its day and featured modern style shock absorbers, a first, along with the monocoque body and numerous other mechanical innovations that make it not just an attractive Italian automobile but significant for a historical perspective as well. This car is not being advertised as it is being held fairly close to the cuff in order to allow an auction house to herald its discovery. There is a very limited opportunity to purchase it privately before it is committed to a major auction house for sale next summer.
